1st Radyr Cubs World Famous Leaders

Hi my name is Alastair Garman (Ali), my Jungle Book name is Mang - The Bat. I live in Radyr and have two boys in 1st Radyr cubs and beavers. I got a lot out of youth organisations when I was growing up and it is now pay back time. I want to help other kids get the same opportunities that I was lucky enough to get. I'm into all things outdoors, in particular caving and anything involving rope work. I like DIY and roast lamb, but dislike computer games and sprouts!!

I am Claire or Raksha –mother wolf, although some know me as Mrs Mang. I went through the girl’s equivalent of the scouting movement (we were not allowed to mingle in those days) and was a young leader to Newport Sea Scouts before moving to Cardiff to do my nurse training. I have 2 boys going through Beavers and Cubs in Radyr. My incentive to get involved, as well as the obvious sheer enjoyment, is to encourage our children to have a taste of fun, team work and independence. As more adults get involved in youth organisations more exciting and varied programs can be introduced to provide a taste of the alternatives to hanging around on street corners. Here is a photo of me having fun on camp.

Hi I’m Nicky Thomas, (Jacarla) I started out as Assistant Beaver Cub leader with Ruth and Emma and had so much fun that I decided to give cubs a try! In my ‘real’ life I’m a School Nurse.

I have 2 boys, one in Scouts and the other in Cubs. As they go through each section they let me know the activities they’ve most enjoyed. However, their ideas can be different to other cubs, in the pack and I feel the programmes we run offer great variety.I believe that Cubs encourages young people to try lots of new activities and experiences to help them develop their independence.

My name is David Bird and I am the leader of the Tuesday Cub pack.  I have transferred to Scouting after many years of being in Boys Brigade.  When my family and I moved to Radyr I decided it was time to reawaken my inner child and get involved in a youth organisation again!  It has been fantastic to see the Radyr Scout Group grow from strength to strength.  After a restful summer I'm raring to go with the Cubs' new activity programme.

In my spare time I like to swim, read and cook.  My specialities are Malaysian Curry and Venison Casserole.  I also like being outdoors, sitting round camp fires and travelling to hot places.  My three dislikes would be liquorice, waking up in leaking tents and discovering there is no food in my food cupboards!

Hi, I’m Andy Bell, known as Rama when dressed in scout uniform.  I live in Morganstown, and have been an assistant leader with Radyr Cubs for nearly a year.  I am now going to leave Cubs and start a new Scout Troop sometime in April 2011.  My stepson has been with the Radyr Scout Group for 4 years (as a beaver and now a cub), and I wanted to get involved because of the fun and personal development scouting has given him.  I’m likely to be involved for quite some time as my son (using me as a pack horse in the photo) is three years old and my new daughter is just 3 months!

Hi, my name is Nikki Proctor, known as Chil to the cubs. I am 21 years old and have just started my final year in becoming a Primary School teacher. I originally joined cubs to gain more experience working with children, however I have enjoyed my time over the last 18months so much I can’t see me ever wanting to leave. Most weeks I am learning as much as the cubs – and am usually embarrassed by a cub that learns to tie the knots before me. As you can see from my picture I enjoy hot climates – therefore you will always find me on indoor, heated cub camps sitting very close to the nearest fire J But this year I am being really brave and going on the rugged outdoor camp in the summer!!

I'm Gareth but my Cub name is Zazu.  I'm twenty years old and have been involved with Radyr Scout Group for as long as I can remember...  I started off as a timid little Beaver and have risen through the ranks to Assistant Cub Leader.  When I'm not tying knots at the Scout Hall or enjoying bacon sandwiches at Parc Le Breos I work in the Special Educational Needs department at Cardiff High.  I like spicy food, being outdoors and travelling.  My photograph shows me catching forty winks after a twenty four hour journey (I flew on a budget airline!) to Malaysia.  I dislike carrots, Welsh drizzle and heights!

I'm Alastair Sloan (Al) and have just started my third scouting experience (I was a cub and scout in Lancashire when I were a lad) as the new Akela for the new Thursday Cub Pack.  I have moved up from Beavers. As there seemed to be lots of enthusiastic children in Radyr wanting to join the Radyr Scout Group, I decided I would take the plunge and take on the role so a second Beaver colony and now second Cub pack could open and give youngsters the opportunity to begin their Scouting adventure. I live in Radyr and have 2 boys, Daniel (7), who is in 1st Radyr Beavers and Cameron who is only 2 but is desperate to be 7! Who knows where this is going to lead but I have a feeling it will be fun.

When not supervising 8 and 10 year old Cubs I can be found supervising 19 year old undergraduates and 21 year old PhD students at Cardiff University - who are more of a handful than a colony of excited Beavers. I love playing music with my bands and "creating" in the Kitchen, but not so keen on The X Factor or Strictly Come Dancing! Oh and this is Lenny - a gator I met while on a trip to Miami.
He's heavier than he looks and trust me, the tape 'round his chops is
required!
